Current Challenges

Currently the clinic is facing two main challenges:

1. DECREASING THE COST OF MEDICATION TO PATIENTS
Due to the extreme poverty in Senga Bay, many patients are unable to afford medication at the current rate of K500 (US $3.60). Our aimis to reduce this cost to a more affordable K50 (US $0.36). This will enable many more patients to have access to medications. This reduction in fees will require the clinic to fundraise US $2,000 every month.

2. FEEDING MALNOURISHED CHILDREN
We are currently seeking sponsorship for our feeding program for malnourished children. The program feeds an average of 55 children per day. During the rainy season when there is not a harvest the numbers of children fed daily increase dramatically. The program costs K70,000 per month, or US $500.

Goals

The following are our future goals for the clinic:

1. CONSTRUCTION OF A GUEST HOUSE
We would like to build a guest house for visiting medical professionals and volunteers enabling them to resie on site. The guest house would also allow volunteers to stay for a longer amount of time. Payment for lodging would also create a way for the clinic to earn revenue. The estimated cost of completing this goal is US $21,000.

2. REPLACEMENT AMBULANCE
We would like to replace the existing ambulance in order to continue to provide affordable transportation to the district hospital. The district hospital is 27 kilometers away from the clinic, and the cost of transportation is prohibative for many patients and their families. The estimated cost of replacing the ambulance is US $57,000.

3. PEDIATRIC WARD
We would like to creat a ten bed pediatric ward to care for sick children. This enables the children to stay in Senga Bay closer to their homes, rather than being referred to the district hospital in Salima. The estimated cost of construction is US 21,000.

4. EXPAND SUPPORT FACILITIES
We would like to build a kitchen and laundry facilities in order to keep up with the demands of the clinic. The estimated cost of construction of the building, a washing machine, and other equipment is US $22,000.

5. FEMALE AND MALE WARDS
We would like to create a male and a female ward with ten beds each. This will enable patients to stay closer to their home rather than being referred to the district hospital in Salima. The estimated cost for completing this goal is US $35,000.
